GrowlMail not installing in Snow Leopard

Postby tcdiver7 » Thu Oct 01, 2009 12:02 am

I can't install GrowlMail on MacOS 10.6.1. I get a rather non-specific error message telling me to contact the software manufacturer. The install log is cryptic as well - apparently there was a problem with the preflight script, but I can't quite make out what that problem was.

Install log:

It's this:

Code: Select all

Sep 30 23:56:23 MacBookPro installd[355]: ./preflight: /tmp/PKInstallSandbox.7jtZ5M/Scripts/com.growl.growlmail.pkg.2VBTP9/preflight: line 9: /bin/rm: Permission denied

That's the step that tries to delete the old copy before installing the new one.

You'll have to do that separately. The best way is to use the Uninstall GrowlMail program to do it.

Thanks a million!

Only trouble is, the uninstall GrowlMail program doesn't run either - it errors with a permission denied message. I have no idea why. My account has administrator privileges.

How can I find out what steps the script is taking so I can do it manually? Or is there a better way to fix this?

Does it ask for an administrator username and password first?

H there,

I have exactly the same problem: Uninstall script is not working at all.

It starts and freezes immediately after it have started. No way to cancel it, but using the tasklist.

Yes, it does.

The error message includes an option to edit the uninstall GrowlMail script. I clicked that to see what it was trying to do. The script tries to run:

Code: Select all

rm -rf /Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail.mailbundle ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail.mailbundle

Neither of those locations exist - apparently I hadn't installed GrowlMail on this system. Any other tips for getting GrowlMail to install.

That's not the same problem that I have - the uninstall script ran, then gave a permission error for me.

What I'm more concerned with is getting GrowlMail installed in the first place, which is where this thread started.

Ok!

You might be right!

My actual problem is , that iMail i still disabling the plugInn with the message, that it is not compatible with the actual iMail Version.
I thought, that the old version haven't been replaced by the new version, but I a not sure.
I have then tried to uninstall the actual pluginn with the uninstall application, but as mentioned before it did not work.

Greetings
Thomas

Yes, it does.

Please run this command in a Terminal:

ls -dl /bin/rm

and post the output here.

Right, yeah, so that's weird. I'm using an administrator account and I couldn't run "rm", which pretty much makes me feel dumb for not repairing permissions before posting here.

After the permission repair, GrowlMail installed without error. Huzzah!

Thank you for your help. I've heard of people having to repair permissions, but in 7 years of OS X use I've never had to do it myself.
