subs in iTunes

Postby melgrowl » Thu Jul 28, 2011 7:28 pm

iTunes 10.4 no longer shows .mov embedded VobSub alongside h.264 video, whereas with Xvid it still does. Previous versions, as far back as 9.2.1, always did no matter what codec (albeit ignoring the display size set using QuickTime Pro when remote played).

Said loss of functionality was first noticed when updating Perian to 1.2.3, from 1.2.1 on Snow Leopard and 1.1.4 on Tiger. Although the most recent iTunes update predates Perian's, Tiger doesn't allow any iTunes past 9.2.1 and so it seemed safe to conclude blaming iTunes. Just to make sure, both Tiger and Snow Leopard machines were down- and then again updated following Perian's or iTunes' guidelines. Confirmation of said loss of functionality ensued.

By your own admittance, or so I understand searching the forum, Apple isn't particularly inclined to assist in matters such as these. Well then, can developer(s) restore said loss of functionality?

cheers,
 OS X Snow Leopard

Referral much appreciated, though there's no mention of either VobSub or Snow Leopard (as per initial post).

Having said that, if I understand this ticket's contents correctly, VobSub support also stops at QuickTime 7.6.6 and iTunes 10.3.1, regardless of OS, as
AV Foundation doesn't support multiple video tracks
But I do hope I misunderstood, even more so since they still show up in QuickTime X! (at least, with Snow Leopard they do)

Considering my ignorance, I can only ask that this glimpse somehow inspires developer(s) to continue both bitmap and text-based subtitle support beyond the boundaries perceived up till now.

cheers,

QuickTime X doesn't use AV Foundation on 10.6; only the new iTunes does. It uses a transitional path which sort-of supports them (if you try to export the movies to some other format, you'll notice that doesn't work very well).

There's nothing we can do on this side about VobSub. Requests for the ability to do that should go to Apple.

So to summarize this thread for my own 'peace of mind' (or piece, if you will), and others' maybe, post iTunes 10.3.1 mov embedded subs support will remain limited.

Xvid + srt or vob: yes, in Snow Leopard <edit> or earlier
h264 + srt or vob: no, regardless

Well, foreign movie fans do face a gloomy prospect. My +4 TB collection certainly does.

take care,

PS please correct me if I 'm wrong

Try QuickTime Player 7 and/or NicePlayer on Lion for you subtitled files.

So there you developer(s) have to deal with subtitles in vob, text and 3GGP and what not.
And then we, us users, have them QT(7 or X)'s native mov embedded or altogether separate.
And then there is iTunes pre or post 10.4 in OS X pre or post 10.7 ... this thread nor any amount of search in forum or tickets or site shedding light as to the exact extent of support. On us mere mortal users, that is.

So where does that leave us, us mere mortal users? And where do you go with this, you omnipotent  developer(s) :???: ?

It leaves you with having to play with it until you figure out what works. That's what we'd have to do.

You, melgrowl, are what is wrong with OSS communities:
You are expecting volunteers, who use their own personal equipment, bought for their own use, not a project, to reformat their drives, installing different OS versions on different architectures, trying a whole host of test files on every single software combination, just because you want the entire matrix of support, including newly added rows and columns by other parties. Yeah, I'll get right on that, I mean, that's what the testing lab in my basement is for, right? So, who pays for this testing lab? Who pays for the time spent conducting the testing? Who pays for the non-existant basement? Oh right, this is a free project. So the matrix should be filled by the community, but seems to fill with more and more ingrates each day. Gee, any guesses as to why I've not worked on Perian for over 2 month now?

So, where do I go with this? I think I'll watch some football this afternoon and enjoy the beautiful fall day we are having.

I know that feeling man. Apple hating you for writing your app as open-source isn't great either.

Nothing I wrote, gbooker, nothing whatsoever implies I 'm expecting anything of the sort. Please read more carefully, I was merely asking. And The_Tick made it all too clear I shouldn't have. Which subtitles are supposed to work in which containers and with which codecs? Why that 's up to users to find out, obviously.

Won't be bothering you again. Ever. But I do appreciate all developers' hard work.

enjoy the game,

What you wrote is actually expecting the sort. What did you expect other than people who took what you said at face value as wanting to have us write up some grid showing xyz supports abc in mno configuration. That's exactly how your post read.

My post was simply pointing out that you could do it, and then write up the docs for it. You took it as something else.

Thank you, The_Tick, for your kind invitation that I somehow must 've overlooked at first. Then again, being as I am "what is wrong with OSS communities" I 'm stuck with yet another misconception.

So, melgrowl, you just cannot read can you? You wondered why I locked this topic in the tirad you sent me via pm. I explained that you are making yourself out to be a poisonous person and locked the topic to prevent it from going further. Since I saw the purpose as being served, I unlocked the topic figuring you would be a better person and not continue your actions. I was obviously wrong. You are a poisonous person, and the fact that you are continuing is exactly why you are what's wrong with OSS communities.
