Dynamic Range and Compression

Postby raoul.schaffner » Thu Apr 14, 2011 8:05 am

just a little note.

maybe i got it all wrong, but i believe that:
1) if dynamic range is high, compression is low
2) if compression is strong, dynamic range is reduced
3) "play soft sounds normally" means no compression
4) "play soft sounds louder" means compression

now, in the perian gui, there's a custom audio option to set compression numerically. the settings mentioned above ("normally" and "louder") correspond to values 1.0 and 2.0. given that fact, i think that the slider in the custom audio options dialog box has a misleading legend. the string on the left side should read "less compression", the one on the right side "more compression".

i hope this is the appropriate forum to submit this... :-)

cheers,
raoul.

Likely due to the though process of the dialog talking about dynamic range or compression. You are correct in that the labels are reversed.
