Perian's code is not even loaded in your crash log. Sorry, but you problem has nothing to do with Perian.

Sorry but your answer is meant to help me, how?

I can not install, uninstall or update any old how. Am I now meant to carry out a complete OS uninstall/install just to update this usually excellent program?!

That is not the greatest of answers. Surely there are other things that you can suggest.

What components do I need to trash manually to uninstall so I can install the update?

Thank you

OK - After researching the Internet regarding this problem I manually removed:

~/Library/QuickTime/Perian.component
~/Library/PreferencePanes/Perian.prefPane
~/Library/Preferences/org.perian.Perian.plist

which uninstalled Perian. I then attempted to install Perian selecting "Install for all users of this computer" again it caused System Preferences to Not Respond. But when I selected "Install for this user only" it installed with no problems.

In the past I have never had any problems with Perian installing via its Automatic Update facility, what has gone wrong this time?

Cheers

Version 1.2.2 installs but crashes System Preferences. Perian seems to be okay after a restart.

Your issues are with System Preferences, not Perian, especially considering how rare they are.

Yes, this is a known issue in System Preferences which is entirely its problem. I believe it could be worked around in the updater, but hopefully future versions of OS X will fix this crash.

I have Perian 1.2.1 with not problems, System Preferences is not responding to this new install of 1.2.2? I am not a terminal user unfortunately, and I do not know how to choose a user during an install, If anyone has gotten past the "preferences not responding," please let me know. Thanks!

Delete these 3 files: (where ~ is your Home folder)

~/Library/QuickTime/Perian.component
~/Library/PreferencePanes/Perian.prefPane
~/Library/Preferences/org.perian.Perian.plist

Download the latest version from here: http://perian.org/

Go through the usual zip & dmg install and when it reaches the part where it asks you to install for a single user or all users, choose the"Install for this user only". All should be well.

~/Library/QuickTime/Perian.component
~/Library/PreferencePanes/Perian.prefPane
~/Library/Preferences/org.perian.Perian.plist

All are removable except: /Library/QuickTime/Perian.component. The QuikTime folder in the Library is empty? Searching for the third file brings up nothing(all files viewable). When the other two are deleted, and Perian 1.2.2 is installed I get the same "beach ball" and preferences locking up?

Download the previous version 1.2.1 from here http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Perian/old-versions and install that. Then do a manual un-install of that version as per my previous post. Then install version 1.2.2

I just wanted to say that 1.2.2 messed everything up on my mac. I tried everything, any solution mentioned here but nothing worked for me. I tested the older versions and the latest stable version which worked for me ist 1.2.

So for everyone else who can't get 1.2.2 to work correctly or even aren't able to install it: Use 1.2. Download links are above. Hopefully you'll get to fix this problem.

If you are having system preferences locking up, you need to provide a sample or your report will simply be ignored. Simply stating that it locks up provides absolutely zero information since none of the developers can reproduce it. Getting a sample is done through Activity Monitor.

Also, there have not been any significant changes to the pref pane since 1.2, so changing versions should have zero effect on system preferences.

I'm listing my Activity Monitor right after the lock up with preferences, this happening trying to install 1.2.1 again to go through the delete process again or to install 1.2.2 directly. If I am sending it right? I put it in-between the "list text."

It's locking up in [NSConnection sendInvocation:internal:]. That's not Perian's code.

Macworld calls the wheel: The Spinning Beach Ball of Death (also known as the SBBOD or the Marble of Doom). I have done some reading and found that new third party programs can cause CPU problems: "Even if your hardware is adequate, an application or process can still monopolize your system. Perhaps an application is hung in an infinite loop or it’s simply inefficient. Maybe a background process is running amok, hogging CPU cycles." The site is: http://www.macworld.com/article/151583/2010/05/spinningbeachballofdeath.html

I hope we can find out what to do, I use the "old version" of perian a lot, and would like the new version.

Yes, we know all what the beach ball is and exactly what causes it. My statement still stands.

It my be my computers fault, but I have no idea what to change or delete to stop it. Installing the old version again or the new version locks up System Preferences.

I ran into the problem described by others. When updating from 1.2.1. to 1.2.2, the updating of the Preference Pane caused System Preferences to freeze, requiring me to Force Quit. I didn't have this problem in prior installations of Perian.

I deleted 1.2.1, hoping that a fresh install of 1.2.2 would work, but it did not.

I ended up reinstalling 1.2.1. I had to install for current user only, as it would not install for all users. The previous 1.2.1 installation had been for all users (the Perian.prefPane was in Library/PreferencePanes, not in User/Library/PreferencePanes, as it is now).

Running Mac OS X 10.6.7.
