REQ: 16x9 Anamorphic support in .mp4 container?

Postby live4ever » Sat Jan 27, 2007 2:28 am

I like to encode DVDs to 720x480 mpeg-4 with the 16x9 flag set to display the video at its original height.

VLC plays these files back properly but QT doesn't.

I'd like to add this as a feature request for the XviD and x264 decoders, also does/will the x264 decoder support more of the MPEG-4 part 10 spec than the QT one that Apple ships standard (right now I encode low-baseline profiles that would work on the iPod).

Thanks for the great software so far.

I like this request. Even though I have never used such a file.

For the 16x9 flag in mp4, see http://trac.perian.org/ticket/80 (it's unfortunately not easy to do due to the inability of a movie to change dimensions during playback in QuickTime.) You should be able to set the track dimensions to 853x480 while still encoding at 720x480 for the same effect, but I've not done too much with creating mp4's myself.

x264 never had a fully functioning decoder, however we're now using ffmpeg's H.264 decoder in SVN, which supports nearly all of MPEG-4 part 10. I think that the only thing of consequence it doesn't support is PAFF interlacing, which is rarely used anyway.
