Why OpenGL?

Postby HarryCovert » Sat Nov 12, 2016 9:01 pm

I have noticed that Vienna is one of few applications that prevents me from switching to the integrated graphics adapter on my MacBook Pro mid-2010. This means that battery usage is higher than necessary. The other applications are Thunderbird and LibreOffice.
I have understood that this is due to (forced?) use of OpenGL by the application. I have difficulties understanding why Vienna, or Thunderbird, would necessitate OpenGL since they are more text based that graphic intensive. Could Vienna be made to not require the discrete graphics adapter (GeForce GT 330M) ?

I'm running Vienna 3.1.7 :88ecb57, macOS 10.12.2 pb2

Unfortunately, we don’t have control on this.
Graphics switching is automatically handled by macOS itself and it is correctly implemented only in early 2011 and later Macbook pros
