Slightly updated look for 2.5

Postby Michael Ströck » Wed Jan 20, 2010 9:31 pm

I just checked in changes that make Vienna even more streamlined and minimal. Starting with 2.5, this is what Vienna will look like:

So, tell us more about 2.5

2.4 is virtually brand new, and seems to work fine for most. When can we expect this newer version?

Thanks in advance.

Sooner rather than later, but I can't give you an exact time-frame. It will be a "small" release for us development-wise, but will offer a lot of new functionality for users. Twitter, Facebook, etc... sharing are built in, and you can now easily write your own plugins to extend Vienna: http://www.vienna-rss.org/?page_id=120

Hope it is faster for people to enjoy.

I'm waiting for new ones.

Good days.

Could we please see a screenshot with the toolbar collapsed? :)

It looks like any other window that has the toobar collapsed. I'll create one though, do you want it with a tabbed browser window as well?

Here, try it for yourself - http://vienna.mpaka.com/

If you play around with Sneak Peeks you should back up the Vienna database before you try them (advice I never follow myself :P ).

If you have any problems with the build let me know.

Now a comment...

I think clicking on the filter icon (which looks more like a funnel than a coffee filter) should bring up the filter bar.

It does :-) Don't know which build you're using, but it definitely works here. As far as icons are concerned, we desperately need a graphic designer, and we know that :-)

Silly me, I was in the browser view and expecting the filter bar to pop up, I'm using 1497 and it does work. Maybe it should vanish when one is in the web browser.

I'll see what I can do to create or find an icon that looks like a filter.

edit: Ya know, most filters are pretty boring and nondescript looking objects, this is gonna be tough. This should be a community contest - think up a small image which clearly conveys itself as a filter. The prize can be a free copy of Vienna.

Filter Icon

Postby AlanR » Fri Jan 22, 2010 4:07 am

I fooled around with the coffee filter icon off and on for a while and finally decided I couldn't make it much better. I made it look better but was still afraid not many people would recognize it as a filter. So I went back to basics.

Image

I think most people understand basic filters and screens.

If anyone wants a copy of the icon I'll upload it.

Hi Alan,

This is harder to understand than the current one IMHO. A funnel-style icon practically is standard for filtering on websites and in many software products. Try this search:

You are right, that is how is it will be. Please remember that you are running a raw development build straight from SVN :-=)

Here it is in its most minimal form, no toolbar, no statusbar, but with active tab-bar.

mmm... I feel suitably ignorant and chastised. :o

but... I do like one from the very first page of your image search link much better than yours! :P

Yeah, that is much simpler and nicer - it would have to be darker/black though, to fit in with all the other icons in Vienna - do you have a suggestion how that could look?

Simply invert it...

edit:
I updated the files at http://vienna.mpaka.com so they have the above version.

If you want it you can pick it out of one of them.

After some thought I made it a teeny bit bigger.

Thanks. I like how the header is gone in the list. More minimalistic. :goodjob:
