How could this be fixed. To me it shows my Alias that I chose in the preferences menu, but to my msn contacts it shows xxz@hotmail.com. Why is that?

Disclaimer: I don't use Adium but I found this thread while searching for relevant information --- the same thing has been happening with an MSN client of mine too (one that I wrote), so I should try to explain what happened. It seems Microsoft changed their server-side implementation of the protocol. Previously, your display name was stored on the server and persisted there; now, they decided not to store it and let the client set it on each login. Adium probably is storing your display name locally and not setting it on the server each time you login. Change your display name and it should.

Yep, maybe this is only a temporary change, we'll see.

My issue isn't the same as the one posted here.
My MSN contacts emails are displayed instead of their Nicknames in my contact list.

My Nickname is displayed to my other contacts as it should.

hm maybe it would be a good work around to create an addressbook entry for every MSN contact. so that adium can make use of that information.

It somehow change your nickname to your first name each X-hours. And each time you log in. Before it only changed in the contact list, but now it actually change in the top of the adium window where you change your status and nick...

Edit: I can confirm at least 3 other Adium-users with the same problem. So I think this is happening to all Adium-msn users.

Just want to chime in and say that I'm also having this problem. My e-mail appears to my contacts instead of my display name. I have myself on my list so I can see it as well. If one of my contacts changes their display name, I can't see the change. However, if I hover the arrow over their name, I'll see (under their "current" name, the old one) a status called "Display Name:" and it'll show their real current one. Quite annoying.

As the ticket I linked to indicates this is not an Adium-only problem. Your descriptions are very kind but this is not an issue that the Adium developers will directly fix.

Is it possible for someone to write a script or plugin that remembers the display name on disconnection/quit, then sets it to that on re-login? At least until this issues is resolved by either pidgin or microsoft... Saves users quite a bit of annoyance having to re-set their display names manually...
That trac ticket for pidgin seems to suggest that they're going to see what microsoft's stance is before they attempt to do any 'fixing'..

I'm experiencing this problem too. My MSN nickname keeps reverting back to my first name on MSN profile every now and then. Very annoying.

I found a somekind of solution for this. If you go to hotmail and change your name to whatever you like it to be in adium then it will show that on adium. Still a problem but at least it's not that annoying.

That's what I ended up doing, but definitely not a solution for this as it's too cumbersome to change our nickname. Plus, it's just the wrong way. There must be a solution and they must solve this issue.

I've ended up changing my MSN name manually on Adium everytime I log on.
I'm no programmer, but wouldn't a patch that pushes our saved display name to the server automatically every time we log on, fix this problem? Adium saves our names in the personal tab of the preferences menu anyway.

Annoying, I know, and I wouldn't expect any programmers to want to have to fix this problem, as it's clearly caused on Microsoft's end. Whether or not it's a server optimisation or them just being dubious software monopolisers remains to seen.

It seems people aren't 100% aware of the fact that this issue would have to be fixed in libpurple. I linked to http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/10763 above and that's where you can follow proceedings.

Pidgin people already fixed it. Is this problem fixed in the new Adium beta?
